The first step in the awakening phase requires you to return your influence cards along with w few other items. Does this mean return them to the influence deck where they would need to be repurchased at some point if drawn? or does this just mean separate them from your deck to your character’s larger deck for deck building listed in one of the later steps?

Whenever the game says DISCARD , it means put them on the bottom of there respective piles or on there discards pile like influence = discardpile , items = storage ...
The game will tell u explicit if u lose a "card or tile" from your campaign like , remove from the game or put it back in the box .
And hold on dude , its allot but its shitloads of fun :)
It does not say return , it says discard . put them in your discard pile .
Step 2 unseal your cards => put them in your discard pile .
So u can make a new one in step 6 .
So u keep evrything u have so far .
