I'm a bit confused about which actions can be taken when. Some are clearly stated (masks can be used anytime) but others I'm not so sure about (dreamer special actions and gaining/using gems, for instance).
So, as I understand:
Masks can be used anytime
Cards can be discarded anytime to pay the cost of a valid action
Normal cards can only be played during your Dreamer's round on the Dreamers Phase during a Dream/Slumber. They can also be played on the Dreamworld map if you find a use for them
Cards with the flash icon can also be played during other players rounds or during the Dreamscape Phase.
Progress cards can be placed anytime. But can their actions be used anytime? Or only when a normal card could be played?
I would imagine you can only use the move action during your Dreamer's round From here on I'm not that sure how it goes:
Can actions on item cards be used anytime by any Dreamer? Can they be used during the Dreamscape Phase or can I pay and use them during other Dreamer's round?
Can character specific actions be played anytime or only when a normal card could be played? For instance, the Tough Guy's action allows you to discard the card to prevent 1 distress on the Dreamscape Phase, but the action doesn't have a flash icon. Do you have to use it on the Dreamers Phase (and maybe waste it if nothing happens on the Dreamscape Phase)?
Can you discard 3 cards to gain a gem at anytime? For instance, to fulfill an Entity effect that requires you to have a gem.
Can you discard a gem to reroll any die at anytime, even if it is not your round/roll?
Can actions be played in between other actions? Let's say I want to move, and I decide to roll the die to boost my intent. I'm not happy with the result, but I'm the Gambler, so I use my skill to reroll. Is this an action (the Gambler's skill) being used in between another action (movement)?
Sorry if I've overlooked something or it seems I'm nitpicking. I really like the rulebook and I think it is pretty clear, but I want to be sure I get everything right before entering the Etherfields :D
Thanks, the detailed explanation helped a lot. I think I finally got it 😀
> Of these four cases, only Tough Guy may use the back action of his Influence deck outside of his round.
As for "unless otherwise stated in the specific action" - it is a case where the card clearly says "when you... (do exactly what is the condition of the card) or "when you are in..." (a specific situation / place), for example:
- "When you suffer Distress during the Dreamscape phase, ..." (then we can use it when suffering Distress during the Dreamscape phase, that is, outside our round),
- "When you Buy cards, ..." (then we can use it when Buying cards),
- "Whenever you resolve a Loot in a Slumber, ..." (then we can use it when resolving Loot after winning in a Slumber),
- "When you Seal / Flip a card, ..."(then we can use it when Sealing/Fliping a card), etc.
- "Dreamworld Map only" (then we can use this only in a game stage where the game takes place on Dreamworld Map, not in Dream / Slumber),
In the case of all other cards, the flash icon solves the doubts, whether the action can only be used in a player's round or outside of it.
We will add to the FAQ. Thanks for pointing this out to us!
I've re-read the Dreamer's special actions and just wanted to be sure I understand what you mean by "unless otherwise stated in the specific action".
- The Tough Guy's action says "When you suffer Distress during the Dreamscape phase, discard this card and prevent 1 Distress". For me it isn't that clear that you can pay and activate the action outside of your round. If you took the rules as written, you should have to pay for the action to activate it during your round and then, during the Dreamscape, discard it to prevent the 1 Distress if/when it happens. But, according to your answer, that is not the spirit of the rules. So I'm understanding that you can pay for an action to activate it exactly at the moment it would be needed to activate, even if that is not your round.
- Then you have the Gambler. She can do her action to reroll any one of her rolls. Let's suppose she plays a flash card during the Dreamscape Phase that requires a die to be rolled. As I've understood it, she could pay and activate her special action then to reroll that die, right?
- What about the Free Spirit. Could she activate her action at any time she needed extra intent? For instance, to pay for a flash card during the Dreamscape Phase? - Finally, if the Specialist wants to unflip a flipped card in the Dreamworld map he could do it, right? What about the Dreamscape phase?
Would you agree that any action can be performed outside of your round if "it makes sense to do it then"? I have the feeling the spirit of the game is to use common sense and not to overcomplicate things, but I'm used to games that are more strict and I want to be sure I got things right :)
Masks can be used anytime
> Yes, but the specific moment / time of using each Mask is given in the description of the given Mask's rule - some are passive and work all the time, some have a specific moment when they can be used, some can be used at any time but once per Turn etc.
Cards can be discarded anytime to pay the cost of a valid action
> Yes.
Normal cards can only be played during your Dreamer's round on the Dreamers Phase during a Dream/Slumber.
> Yes, unless otherwise stated on a given card - e.g. that this card can only be used in a specific situation / space, or that it can be used outside of our Round.
They can also be played on the Dreamworld map if you find a use for them
> Yes.
Cards with the flash icon can also be played during other players rounds or during the Dreamscape Phase.
> Yes.
Progress cards can be placed anytime.
> Yes.
But can their actions be used anytime?
> No.
Or only when a normal card could be played?
> Yes, unless otherwise stated on a given card - e.g. that this card can only be used in a specific situation / space, or that it can be used outside of our Round.

> Yes.
From here on I'm not that sure how it goes:
Can actions on item cards be used anytime by any Dreamer? Can they be used during the Dreamscape Phase or can I pay and use them during other Dreamer's round?
> You may use any actions (from your own Influence cards in your hand, actions from your Progress zone cards, special actions from back of your Dreamers Influence deck, actions from available Items, actions from Dreamscape space you are on, actions from other available / active Dream cards etc.) only during your Round - unless otherwise stated in the specific action / element (e.g. some actions allow you to react to a specific situation or allow you to reroll the result).
> In this case it is written in the rule of this action, so yes - you can use this action in Dreamscape phase.
Can you discard 3 cards to gain a gem at anytime? For instance, to fulfill an Entity effect that requires you to have a gem.
> Yes.
Can you discard a gem to reroll any die at anytime, even if it is not your round/roll?
> Yes.
Can actions be played in between other actions? Let's say I want to move, and I decide to roll the die to boost my intent. I'm not happy with the result, but I'm the Gambler, so I use my skill to reroll. Is this an action (the Gambler's skill) being used in between another action (movement)?
> Yes, as long as it is clear from their description - in this case this action is for rerolls, so if you need to reroll at the moment, you can use it.
Thanks for your questions!
